Book review: “The Skippack School”

By Rachel M. Heironimus

Today I finished reading “The Skippack School” by Marguerite de Angeli. It was about a boy named Eli Shrawder who came with his family to America from Germany. At first, he does not want to go to school, he is afraid that it will be like his old school in Germany. But, he soon finds out that he likes it. It was very good and I would give it 4 out of 5 stars!

Book Review: “The Bears on Hemlock Mountain”

By Rachel M. Heironimus

Today I read “The Bears on Hemlock Mountain” written by Alice Dalgiesh and illustrated by Helen Sewell. It was a true story about a boy named Jonathan. One day his mother sent him over Hemlock Mountain to get a big soup pot. She also told him there are no bears on Hemlock Mountain. But as Jonathan soon finds out, there are bears on Hemlock Mountain! It was pretty good and I would give it 2 out of 5 stars

Today I finished Reading “Pocahontas and the Strangers” by Clyde Robert Bulla and illustrated by Peter Burchard. It was about Pocahontas. First she saw some of the white men’s “great canoes” and then she and her brother went to see their camp. Then Pocahontas brought food to them.

Book Review: “Lose your Cool”

By Adam E. Heironimus

I recently had the privilege of reading “Lose your Cool” by Zach Hunter. It was about how we all need to wake up from our normal, everyday lives and become passionate: passionate for Jesus, passionate for the poor, and passionate for the things that we know are right. Every chapter in “Lose your Cool” profiled several passionate individuals such as William Wilberforce, Keith Green, Mother Teresa or George Muller who had been able to use their passion to change the world in a positive way, and told how we too could also become like them and use our talents, abilities and gifts for good. I really enjoyed reading  this book and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Using the 5 star system, I would give “Lose your Cool” 5 stars!

Book Review: “Radical”

By Adam E. Heironimus

I recently finished reading “Radical” by David Platt. As the subtitle says, it is about “taking back your faith from the American dream” and living a life that’s radically devoted to Jesus Christ. David Platt says over and over in his book that Jesus didn’t call us to live comfortable lives, hoarding our resources to use selfishly on ourselves- Jesus called us to “take up our cross and follow him” wherever he happens to lead us, whether it’s to Africa or to the downtown rescue mission, whether he calls us to spread the gospel in Asia or our own neighborhoods- we as Christians are called to be radical, giving of our time, our money and ourselves to further advance God’s kingdom. This book was very convicting to me and I would highly recommend it to anyone who’s interested in making a positive impact in the world they live in, rather than just sitting back and watching others serve Jesus. I would give it 5 out of an available 5 stars.

Book Review: “Missionary Stories With the Millers”

By Adam E. Heironimus

Today I finished reading “Missionary Stories With the Millers”, the last book in the “Miller Family” series to my siblings. This book is unique among the five in the series in that, instead of being a collectio of stories about the Miller family, it’s a collection of stories about missionaries that the Miller children’s mother tells them every night. There are some stories about very well known missionaries, such as Jim Eliot, Amy Carmichael and Hudson Taylor, as well as some equally good stories about  lesser known missionaries and the trials that they have gone through by the grace of God. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who would like to get a little “sample” of many different missionaries lives, and I would give it a solid 5 out of 5 stars!

“Missionary Stories With the Millers” is available for purchase at Amazon.com

Book Reviews: “Storytime with the Millers” “School Days with the Millers”

By Adam E. Heironimus
I recently finished reading “Storytime with the Millers” and “School Days with the Millers”, both by Mildred A. Martin, to my younger siblings. These two books are also part of the “Miller Family” series and continue in the same style, with short, stand alone stories that begin with a child having a problem, with a parent, teacher or other responsible adult then addressing the problem and giving the child a verse of scripture about their problem, and ending with the child putting their new found knowledge into practice. We all enjoyed these God-honoring books very much, and I would give them both 5 out of 5 stars!

5k

This Saturday I had the privilege of running in the Cherish Kids 5k run. I didn’t win anything, but I got my best time ever by 2 minutes and 16 seconds, which was a reward in itself! My time was 23:20, placing me 7th in my age category(15-19) and 76th overall (716 people ended up crossing the finish line). I had a great time and was able to help raise money for children in need of adoption while I was doing it- what more could you ask for?

Happy Birthday Luke!

Luke joined the ranks of the teenagers on August 28! He went on a canoe trip with our dad from Friday afternoon til Sunday morning, when they came back to our house to join us. After going to church, we came back home and spent a relaxing remainder of the day, giving Luke his presents, swimming, watching movies and eating cake. We didn’t take that many pictures, but here they are, along with pictures he and dad took on their canoe adventure:

Fishing

Roasting “Gourmet” (A.K.A. Hotdogs) over the fire.

Who needs a skillet when you have a rock to fry your ham on? (bottom of the picture)

More fishing

Book Reviews: “Prudence and the Millers”,”Wisdom and the Millers”

By Adam E. Heironimus

I recently read my siblings “Wisdom and the Millers” and “Prudence and the Millers”, both by Mildred A. Martin. They are collections of short stories, in which the Miller children have various problems such as lying, tattling, snooping and slothfulness, which the children’s parents help them work out in a godly way- using a verse from proverbs as a framework for what they’re saying. Of all the children’s books I’ve reviewed so far, these ones are definitely the most character building, and I would highly recommend them to anyone, especially parents trying to instill godly principals into their children.
We all enjoyed them and would give them 5 out of 5 stars

Book Review: “Coon Tree Summer”

By Adam E. Heironimus

Today I finished reading my younger brothers “Coon Tree Summer” by Mary Landis, the first book in a series that is continued by “Ice Slide Winter”, which I read to them several days ago. Just like “Ice Slide Winter” it was very, very good and continues (or actually, begins) the tradition of excellence that we all enjoyed from “Ice Slide Winter”, chronicling the many trials, adventures and projects of the Brooke family.

We would all highly recommend it, and I would give it 5 out of 5 stars.

“Coon Tree Summer” is available at Amazon.com

Book Review: “Ice Slide Winter”

By Adam E. Heironimus

Today I finished reading my siblings “Ice Slide Winter” by Mary M. Landis. We all enjoyed the story as it following the adventures and excitement of the  8 Brooke children and their father and mother, as they built forts, sledded, and learned to “live together in unity”. I was really blessed by how well the children responded to the admonition and advice of their parents, always changing their ways when they were corrected.

I would give it 5 out of an available 5 stars

“Ice Slide Winter” is available both  new and used on Amazon.com

Bread Baking

Isaac, John and I blessed the family by baking bread yesterday morning, and several of my sibs and I were able to get a few pictures of the excitement, which I thought you might enjoy.

Isaac was in charge of the wet ingredients

The dry ingredients were John’s domain

We all helped mix the dry and wet together

Isaac put the dough evenly into the 5 pans (with some help from me)

After it was done cooking, I took it out of the roaster (which we used instead if the oven to avoid heating up the house)

Unfortunately, while it cooked, the bread has rose a lot more than I had expected it too, resulting in this sorry looking mess!
(They still tasted good,though!)

Book Review: “Autumn With the Moodys”

By Adam E. Heironimus
Yesterday I finished reading “Autumn With the Moodys” to my siblings. We all really enjoyed it and we would all highly recommend it for it’s humor, it’s literary quality, and it’s wonderful christian message that is woven throughout the story, which includes some good examples of witnessing and dealing with problems and trials in a biblical way. I would give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

“Autumn With the Moodys” is available at Amazon.com and Titus2.com

Happy Birthday John!

John turned 8 on Saturday, August 13 and we all had a wonderful time celebrating with him, I took pictures all day and I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the highlights:

After we ate breakfast, John opened his presents, which included some diet Coke and Mentos for an experiment

The evil genius in action!

John and Isaac enjoyed cooling off in the pool to escape the 100 degree heat

While John was swimming, Rachel and I made pizzas for his birthday dinner

The test…
They passed!
After dinner, Mom and Rachel prepared us all a delicious dessert of Angelfood cake, strawberries, and whipped cream
Make a wish!

Book Review “Summer With the Moodys”

By Adam E. Heironimus

Yesterday night I finished reading my younger sibs the first book in the Moody family series: “Summer With the Moodys”. It is a little bit more far-fetched and crazy then the other 4 books that we’ve read, but that kind of gives it a special charm that makes it stand out as a little bit more of a funny, exciting book! I liked this book because the siblings actually had a (very) few conflicts, which their parents showed them how to work out in a constructive and God-honoring way, somewhat unlike the other books, where the children act almost “angelically” and unrealistically good. We all really enjoyed this book and would give it 5 out of 5 stars!
You can buy it on Amazon.com used, or at Titus2.com new.

Book Review: “Summer Days with the Moodys”

By Adam E. Heironimus
I recently finished reading “Summer Days with the Moodys” aloud to my younger siblings, it is the 5th book in the “Moody Family” series and, continuing the tradition of the first 4, is very good and edifying. I was really encouraged by how well behaved the children were, always being respectful and obedient to each other, their parents, and anyone else that they came in contact with. If you want a fun read-aloud (or read-alone) I would Highly recommend you get a copy of “Summer Days with the Moodys”!
I would give this book 4.5 out of an available 5.
“Summer Days with the Moodys” isn’t currently available at Amazon.com, but you can buy it new on Titus2.com

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Day #2

This Friday our Grandparents took us back to Wilson’s creek to see even more of the sights, sounds and smells of the civil war reenactment, Thursday night had been amazing, but it was nothing compared to the size (and noise) of Friday’s “battle”!
Children beware!
John and Rachel are playing a game called “the graces”. Girls in the 1860′s used it to exercise their arms- good luck trying to get deltoids that way!
I took this picture as the “Soldiers were marching onto the battlefield to get ready to “Fight”, except for the yellow tape, it’s amazing how non-21st century this picture looks!
This cannon was only 15 yards behind us!

John+Rifle+Bayonet=?
I hope you enjoyed the pictures an eighth as much as I enjoyed being able to take them!
Adam

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Day #1

Yesterday we were able to go to the beginning of a 4 day sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary of the battle of Wilson’s Creek. It was truly amazing, and I thought you might enjoy seeing a few pictures I took while we were there:
The reenactment didn’t begin until 45 minutes after we got there, so Rachel was able to look around in the “Sutler camp” browsing all the different tents
Pretty dresses!
The guns and swords suited John and Luke’s tastes a little more closely

The cavalry would occasionally come within 5 feet of where we were standing!
The infantry would purposefully aim high when it got into close quarters “combat”

Behind where we were standing is where all of the main actions of the skirmish were going on.
If you ever have the chance, I would highly recommend coming to a reenactment- they really make history “come alive” in a whole new way!
Have a good day,
Adam

Book Review: “Vostaas : White Buffalo’s Story of the Plains Indian Life”

By Rachel M. Heironimus
Today I finished reading “Vostaas : White Buffalo’s Story of the Plains Indian Life” written by William White Buffalo and illustrated by the students at the Labre Indian School. It was about the different tribes of Indians that lived on the plains, it also talked about how the Indian’s lives have changed and how they live now. It was pretty good and I would give it 3 out of 5 stars.

Book Review: “The Corn Grows Ripe”

By Rachel M. Heironimus
Today I finished reading “The Corn Grows Ripe” written by Dorothy Rhoads and illustrated by Jean Charlot, it was about a boy whose name was Tigre. One day his father breaks his leg and cannot work, so it is up to Tigre to clear the land and plant the corn.
It was pretty good and I would give it 3 out of 5 stars.
You can buy it on Amazon.com

Cookies!

Isaac,Paul and I made some cookies yesterday, and I thought you might enjoy a few pictures of the process (we only got two pictures of the whole process, so there aren’t that many). It was interesting making the cookies with Paul, since we had him doing almost the same jobs he had done when we made waffles, convincing him that we were working on waffles, not cookies (this also resulted in some confusion among the people not involved- Paul was telling them we were making one thing while Isaac and I were saying we were making something else!)

Isaac and I put them on the trays (of which there were 4) and then I put them in our trusty roaster oven (our mom really likes using it because we can put it out in the garage and not heat up the house)
Everybody agreed that the cookies were a success- even Paul!

That’s happiness for you!
Have a blessed (that’s a word the Moodys use a lot) day!
Adam

Book Review: “Spring with the Moodys”

By Adam E. Heironimus
I recently had the opportunity to read aloud “Spring with the Moodys” by Sarah Maxwell to my brothers and sisters
As you might expect, it is the fourth book in the Moody family series and it is (continuing the tradition) very good, as the Moody family continues witnessing to their unsaved friends and family members. The methods the Moodys used to witness were (I thought) very good, and I was able to get a few good ideas from them (and get convicted of how un-evangelistic I am). We all really enjoyed this book and I would give it 4.5 out of an available 5 stars.
You can buy this book used on Amazon.com or new from Titus2.com
